Aadhaar Card Update - Address, Document, Biometric & Mobile Number Update

Keeping your Aadhaar details up-to-date is essential for government services. Aadhaar data includes demographic information (like name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, email) and biometric information (like fingerprints, iris scans and photograph) and UIDAI allows updates to most of these through official channels based on rules and documentation.

In this comprehensive article, you’ll learn all about Aadhaar updates, what can be updated, how to update each type (including with the new Aadhaar app), updated rules/fees, required documents, processing times, and important tips.

What Aadhaar Data Can Be Updated

According to UIDAI, the following details are update-eligible:

  • Demographic details (can be updated): Name, Address Date of Birth / Age, Gender, Mobile Number, Email Address, Relationship information (e.g., parent/spouse)
  • Document Update: You can update the latest Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents.
  • Biometric data (can be updated but in person): Fingerprints, Iris scans, Facial photograph

Update Mobile Number

UIDAI’s new Aadhaar app now allows users to update their registered mobile number directly via the app without centre visits.

  • Launch the Aadhaar app on your phone and sign in using your Aadhaar number and the app’s security method (e.g., MPIN or OTP).
  • Once logged in, navigate to the “Services” section from the app’s home screen.
  • Under services, select “Update Mobile Number” (or similar option). This will start the mobile update workflow.
  • Enter the new mobile number you want to link with your Aadhaar.
  • An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to the new mobile number to confirm that it is reachable and owned by you. Enter this OTP in the app.
  • You will be asked to complete face authentication using your phone’s camera. This step helps verify that the Aadhaar holder (you) is physically present and matches the Aadhaar biometric data stored with UIDAI.
  • Once authentication is successful, you will be prompted to pay the mobile number update fee (currently ₹75, as per updated UIDAI fee rules).

After payment and verification, your mobile number update request is submitted. According to UIDAI, changes may take up to 15–30 days to reflect in Aadhaar records.

You will receive SMS notifications on your updated mobile number once the change is processed.

Biometric Update

Biometric updates are usually required when:

  • A child enrolled under age 5 needs re-enrolment at age 5 and later at age 15.
  • Authentication failures occur due to poor or outdated biometric data.
  • Changes in fingerprints or iris data are needed due to age, injury or other medical reasons.

Process

  • Visit an Authorised Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre
    • Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK), or
    • UIDAI authorised Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre
  • Tell the operator you want a biometric update (fingerprints + iris + photo).
They will open the update application and start the process.
  • You will be asked to confirm your Aadhaar details on the screen.
This ensures the update is being done in the correct Aadhaar record.
  • The operator will scan all 10 fingerprints one by one using the biometric device.
  • Next, your iris scan will be captured using the iris scanner.
You may be asked to look straight into the device for a few seconds.
  • Your live photo will be taken at the centre and updated in UIDAI records.
  • For security, the operator will complete the update using biometric authentication, confirming that the Aadhaar holder is present and approving the update.

After submission, you will receive an acknowledgement slip containing:

  • URN (Update Request Number)
  • Date of update request
  • Type of update requested
